White House Releases False Transcript of Biden's "Garbage" Comment. Biden replied, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”

Stefanik and Comer said the White House, “instead of apologizing or clarifying President Biden’s words,” sought to “change them (despite them being recorded on video) by releasing a false transcript of his remarks.”

“The move is not only craven, but it also appears to be in violation of federal law, including the Presidential Records Act of 1978,” they wrote. “White House staff cannot rewrite the words of the President of the United States to be more politically on message.”

The letter comes after President Biden spoke during a Zoom call with Vote Latino, one of the largest Latino voter and civic outreach organizations in the U.S. Tuesday. Biden was asked about a comment made Sunday during a Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in which comedian Tony Hinchcliffe (Tony Hinchcliffe a insult comic) called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” John Stewart is one of the insult comics.

Stefanik and Comer pointed to Biden’s remarks Tuesday night, saying, “Americans were rightfully insulted, then, when President Biden, seeking to boost Ms. Harris’ presidential campaign, referred to an enormous swath of the country as “floating … garbage.” HALF THE COUNTRY IF YOU BELIEVE THE POLLS.

Biden replied, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”

Biden made the remarks during a Zoom call with Vote Latino while Harris was delivering her last big pitch to voters in a big speech at the Ellipse in Washington, DC. "We won't lose a single voter because of it," said one campaign adviser who went unnamed by CNN. 

The campaign is reportedly "infuriated" by the remarks, which have sidelined the news cycle and put Harris on the defensive when she expected to be winning on Wednesday after her major "closing" arguments speech. "The Biden gaffe yesterday is just so infuriating," said an official with the administration. "Nobody wants him out there."

Biden has reportedly been ready to stump for the Harris campaign for weeks, but her aides have been pushing him off. Democrats have been fighting the image of Biden throughout Harris' 4-month-old presidential campaign and seeking to distance their new nominee from the old one. Biden hasn't made that easy.

Both Harris and her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have been pressed for answers on Wednesday. Harris was asked to answer for Biden's remarks as she stood outside a waiting plane at Andrews Air Force base. Walz was expected to come up with a good response in an ABC News interview.  He shied away from saying anything negative against Biden. "I think there’s– the frustration we’ve seen since January 6, the frustration with Donald Trump’s rhetoric of division, it does fire passions, and I think … President Biden was very clear that he’s speaking about the rhetoric we heard at that. So, it doesn’t undermine it," he said.

Both candidates said that Biden had attempted to clarify his remarks. Shortly after he made them, and the clip of the Zoom call went viral, the White House put out a copy of the transcript of the remarks, which showed a carefully placed apostrophe, slightly changing the meaning of what he'd said.

What everyone heard was Biden saying: "The only garbage I see floating out there are his supporters," Biden said, referring to about half the American electorate. "His demonization of people is unconscionable and it's unAmerican." 

The clarification read "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American." The whole thing was in response to a joke.

Trump responded to the comments from the stage of a rally where he was speaking, saying "You remember Hillary, she said deplorable, then she said irredeemable, right, but she said deplorable, that didn't work out. But I think garbage is worse, right?" Then he suggested forgiveness for Biden, who "really doesn't know" what he said.

Political campaigns are always contentious. Republicans have been called Nazis’, Deplorables and far worse. Kamala with her iconic ‘drunken’ cackles has been made fun of for them, they are over done at the worse times when humor is not the appropriate time. Walz her VP choice makes gaffes all the time, and calls himself a Knucklehead after catching them, or they are pointed out. Biden has been the GAFE KING since day one and only grown worse as he sinks into Dementia.

The political world has been abuzz with President Joe Biden's remarks referring to Trump supporters as "garbage" on Tuesday night, a perfect way to distract from Vice President Kamala Harris' "closing argument speech." While Biden's handlers--posting from his X account later that same night--tried to offer a non-apology and a stealth edit to explain away his remarks, the Kamala HQ account responded in an incredibly tone-deaf fashion. 

What the clips shown don't reveal is that the Trump campaign has distanced themselves from Hinchcliffe and the joke, and that Trump himself has said it would have been better for the comedian to have not been present. Many others also criticized the joke. Meanwhile, the Republican nominee still received the endorsement from a Puerto Rican senator.
